Welcome to another edition of “Meet the ESA BIC Denmark Startups”, where we highlight the startups currently incubated in the ESA BIC Denmark programme.
Meet PermaSat, the team bringing “5G for satellites” to life. Imagine your phone only having Wi‑Fi and staying offline whenever you left home. That is how most satellites work today: they collect data in orbit and then have to “come home” over a ground station before they can deliver it. PermaSat instead wants satellites to connect directly into existing 5G non‑terrestrial networks, so they can stay online and send back valuable data continuously, not just in short contact windows.
One of the clearest impact cases is Earth‑observation missions for disaster monitoring. When a wildfire or flood hits, getting imagery and data instantly instead of hours can change how responders act on the ground. In PermaSat’s vision, satellites no longer have to wait for the next pass over a ground station before sharing what they see, they transmit as soon as the data is generated.
As part of the ESA BIC Denmark programme, PermaSat is now turning this “5G for space” concept into a robust, scalable connectivity layer that can support the next generation of European space missions; starting from a master‑thesis prototype and growing into a commercial platform built by a team of electrical engineers and space‑communications specialists.
